Anything oil-based — oils break down tape adhesive and cause slipping.
Oil dissolves the tape adhesive. Even small amounts near the taped panels can weaken the bond and cause them to slip or slide.
This includes natural oils from your scalp, but those are manageable with proper washing. The bigger issue is products that deposit oil directly onto or near the tape.
Once oil breaks down the adhesive, the panels lose their grip. You'll need an early re-tape to fix it, which costs time and money.
Oil-based shampoos and conditioners. Check ingredients for coconut oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, or any oil-infused formulas. Use sulfate-free AND oil-free products only.
Hair oils and serums. This includes popular products like Moroccan Oil, coconut oil treatments, and leave-in serums. No oils anywhere near your roots.
Oil-based leave-in conditioners. Many leave-ins contain oils for shine and moisture. These are great for natural hair but disastrous for tape-ins.
Scalp treatments with oils. Hot oil treatments, oil-based masks, and scalp serums all need to be avoided while wearing tape-ins.
Sulfate-free, oil-free shampoo. Look for products specifically labeled as safe for tape-in extensions or oil-free formulas.
Lightweight conditioner on ends only. Apply conditioner mid-length to ends, avoiding the roots and taped areas completely.
Water-based styling products. Gels, mousses, and sprays that don't contain oils are safe to use on the length of your hair.
Heat protectant spray (oil-free). Many heat protectants contain oils — read labels carefully and choose oil-free versions.
Read the ingredient list carefully. If you see any type of oil in the first 5-10 ingredients, it's not safe for tape-ins.
Watch for sneaky oils: dimethicone (silicone oil), mineral oil, and essential oils all count. Avoid them near the roots.
When in doubt, ask. We can recommend specific products that we know work well with tape-in extensions.
Save your favorite oil-based products for the ends of your hair only — never the roots or mid-lengths near the taped panels.
