4-6 months before removal — the longest wear time of any extension method.
Keratin bond extensions last 4-6 months before they need to be removed. This is significantly longer than tape-in or hand-tied methods, which require repositioning every 6-8 weeks.
The bonds stay secure throughout this entire period. As your natural hair grows, the bonds grow down with it, but they remain attached and functional.
At the 4-6 month mark, the growth has pushed the bonds far enough down that it's time for removal. The extension hair itself is usually still in great condition and can often be reused.
Hair growth rate. Everyone's hair grows at a different pace. Faster growth means you'll hit the removal point sooner, while slower growth extends wear time.
Care and maintenance. Proper brushing, washing with sulfate-free products, and avoiding oils near the bonds keeps them secure longer.
Installation quality. Properly placed bonds with the right amount of hair per section last longer and hold better than rushed or overloaded installations.
Natural oil production. Very oily scalps can sometimes cause bonds to slip slightly earlier, though quality keratin bonds are designed to resist this.
If the extension hair is still in good condition after removal, it can be reused for a new installation. Most clients get 2-3 installs from one set of hair.
The bonds themselves are replaced each time — you can't reuse the keratin tips. But the extension hair is evaluated, cleaned, and re-tipped with fresh bonds.
Reusing hair saves money since you're only paying for removal, re-tipping, and reinstallation — not purchasing new extension hair.
The bonds have grown significantly down from your scalp — typically 2-3 inches or more depending on your hair growth.
You're starting to feel the weight differently or notice the bonds when you touch your hair.
The extension hair is starting to tangle more easily or look less fresh despite proper care.
It's been 4-6 months since installation. Even if everything still looks good, it's time to remove and either take a break or reinstall.
