Will Extensions Damage My Hair?

When installed and maintained properly, no.

The Short Answer

Properly installed extensions don't damage your natural hair. Damage happens when extensions are installed incorrectly, left in too long, or not maintained.

The key is working with someone who knows what they're doing and following the care routine.

What Causes Damage

Installing on weak or damaged hair. If your natural hair is already fragile, extensions add weight it can't support. A consultation helps determine if your hair is ready.

Too much weight in one section. Overloading small sections of hair causes breakage. Proper placement distributes weight evenly.

Skipping move-up appointments. As your hair grows, extensions need to be moved up. Waiting too long puts tension on the wrong parts of your hair.

Poor maintenance. Not brushing properly or sleeping with tangled, wet hair causes matting and breakage.

How to Protect Your Hair

Choose the right method for your hair type. Fine hair does better with hand-tied or tape-in. Thicker hair can handle keratin bonds.

Keep move-up appointments. Every 6-8 weeks for tape-in and hand-tied, every 4-6 months for keratin bonds.

Follow the care routine. Brush twice daily, wash 2-3 times per week with sulfate-free products, and don't go to bed with wet hair.

Work with a specialist. Someone who focuses on extensions knows how to place them without causing tension or damage.

What About Hair Loss

You'll see some hair come out when you brush or wash — that's normal. Everyone sheds 50-100 hairs per day naturally.

With extensions, those shed hairs get caught in the bonds or wefts instead of falling out immediately. When you brush, they release all at once, which can look like a lot but is actually just your normal shed hair.

If you're seeing more shedding than usual or notice thinning, that's a sign something needs to be adjusted. Reach out immediately so we can check the placement and weight distribution.
